Web Hosting Company, Freewebs, Granted First U.S. Patent
Silver Springs, Maryland - September 18, 2006 - Freewebs.com, has been granted its first-ever patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The patented technology is designed to allow Internet content providers to replicate software across web servers, to maintain consistently fast response times, as network traffic surges from special events, news or geographic situations.
The company has received U.S. Patent No. 7,085,825, titled ''Apparatus, Method and System for Improving Application Performance Across a Communications Network.'' Last month, the company announced that it had formed the Freewebs Farms development community (www.freewebsfarms.com), a collective encouraging the collaborative development of new tools and applications, and also acquired technologies from Mad4Milk.net, a developer of Web 2.0 applications.
The patent covers technology that can dynamically replicate one or more nodes on a network in response to a user request. For content providers, when a specific Web server or servers are being over utilized, the technology will quickly optimize underutilized capacity by automatically replicating applications or content to a more-optimal server or servers, and route subsequent requests to them. The benefit for end users is consistently quick response time, while content providers can offer optimized, even "tiered" levels of content distribution services.
Rebecca Wettemann, Vice President with industry analyst firm, Nucleus Research remarked, ''As Internet users become more and more accustomed to Google-like response speeds wherever they are on the Web, those that can deliver will be the most successful. This innovation provides a broader group of content providers with the potential for Google-like scalability--and less risk that viewers will move on when a site is too slow.''
Shervin Pishevar, President of Freewebs commented, ''At its core, Freewebs is an innovation company. We have already built a massively- scalable platform capable of supporting 50 million users. Now, we're expanding our offerings through new innovations--from this new patent to the developments being created by the Freewebs Farms community--that will create a better experience for everyone that uses the Internet: large content providers; individuals sharing photos, blogs, music and video on their own Web sites; large and small companies doing business online; and, ultimately, anyone who consumes Internet content.''
Founded in 2001, Freewebs.com is a free, do-it-yourself web site builder that guarantees that anyone with an Internet connection can easily create a complete, high-quality web site through its publishing platform. According to the company, Freewebs.com has been fueled by viral growth, offering members a complete personal digital hub that includes web pages, blogs, profile pages, photo sharing, and video, within a unified web presence. The company services more than 10 million users around the globe.
