Google Launches Hosted Domain Apps
August 29, 2006 -- Google (google.com) announced on Monday it has launched a beta offering of Google Apps for Your Domain, a suite of hosted collaboration applications for small to medium-sized businesses and other groups. Organizations can now sign up for the beta version of the free browser-based, hosted-application service.
The company plans to charge larger organizations for the service. Google will announce the details and pricing structure when the rollout date is set. The free offering includes Gmail and Google's Calendar, Talk and Page Creator applications, all of which has been rolled out in recent months and which Google has been integrating this year.
Matthew Glotzbach, head of products for Google's enterprise division, says the company will add more applications over time, but would not specify what those applications would be. Many have speculated that Google's online word processor and spreadsheet will become part of the hosted collaboration suite.
The premium version will offer more support, service level agreements and "richer integration" of applications with the domain, says Glotzbach. Since the launch of Gmail, Google has collected feedback from SMBs and universities regarding that application. The company has been beta testing domain-based Gmail for months.
