Verio Expands North American IPv6 Gateway Services Offering to Larger User Base; IPv6 Access Now Available Through Any Existing US-Based Internet Conn

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sep 19, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Verio, a subsidiary of NTT Communications and a leader in global IP solutions, today announced it is expanding the reach of its Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) Gateway Services to a larger user base by making the commercial offering available through any existing US-based Internet connection, regardless of the Internet access provider or network being accessed. With the use of a router capable of supporting IPv6 traffic, customers without a direct connection to the NTT Communications Global IP Network can now receive IPv6 Tunneling Service from Verio.

This new off-net configured static IPv6 tunnel offering provides early adopters of the technology an easy and inexpensive way to receive IPv6 connectivity for testing and development purposes. The offering will also encourage US-based businesses, government entities and research and education institutions to begin the process of integrating IPv6 into future network deployments, as well as progressively developing a strategy for full migration to IPv6 as business requirements dictate.

IPv6 aims to overcome many of the limitations posed by the current IPv4 protocol, such as increased security, easier administration and superior reliability, and in anticipation of widespread deployment of IPv6, the US Department of Defense has set a goal to migrate to the new protocol by 2008. Similarly, the US Office of Management and Budget has announced it intends to require support for IPv6 across government agencies by 2008, and issued a report identifying planning considerations for migration. The report states that IPv6 "can facilitate the development of a variety of new applications that take advantage of the end-to-end communications it provides."

Early interest in potential IPv6 applications has centered around diverse industries and areas that range from the public sector, to healthcare, transportation and manufacturing.

"Native6 had very limited options for obtaining IPv6 connectivity, most of which were high latency tunneled connections," said Yurie Rich, CEO of Native6, Inc. "In working with the engineers at Verio, we were able to provision a tunnel that significantly increased the quality of our IPv6 connection, which had an impact on our performance and ability to work with our partners and clients via the IPv6 Internet. Verio's Off-net Tunneling Service was the right way for us to go."

"As a leader in the IPv6 movement and a strong proponent of the technology, Verio understands that migration to IPv6 can seem an overwhelming and daunting task. We hope that this new offering will help to ease the process for those businesses not currently benefiting from direct connectivity to the NTT Communications Global IP Network," said Stan Barber, vice president of engineering operations for Verio. "Verio is dedicated to the wide-spread use of IPv6 and this affordable, creative way of offering IPv6 services to a much larger audience than customers with direct attachments to our global IP network was intended to help accelerate the acceptance and deployment of IPv6 in the US."

Verio is also a sponsor of the North American IPv6 Technology Conference, September 19-22, at San Jose State University. Verio will exhibit at the event and have real-world IPv6 business applications through various hands-on demonstrations to attendees. Additionally, Verio will provide IPv6 WAN connectivity for the event, allowing event attendees and exhibitors to have free IPv6 access and will give those present an opportunity to utilize the company's new off-net tunneling service.

Together, Verio and NTT Communications provide the only large-scale IPv6 Global Network covering four continents, including North America, Asia, Europe and Australia. Verio and NTT Communications launched the first North American IPv6 commercial service in 2003 and today has more than 500 customers.

Availability

Verio's new off-net tunneling service is available immediately to any US-based Internet user with a router capable of supporting IPv6 traffic, for a cost of $150 per month for a 0.5Mb rate-limited tunnel. For more information, please call 1-877-8-NTT-NET.
